Houston made history as Afrovibes TV & Radio hosted one of the most significant and inclusive political debates in recent memory, the Texas 18th Congressional District Debate. With the seat once held by legendary leaders like Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Mayor Sylvester Turner, the district is entering a new era of leadership. Afrovibes ensured that Houstonians, and a global audience, witnessed this pivotal moment through a dynamic and transparent debate broadcast.

What made this event stand out was not just the weight of the office in question, but the remarkable number of candidates in attendance, the highest ever gathered on one stage for this race. Sixteen candidates are vying to represent the district in November 2025, and nearly half participated in the Afrovibes-hosted forum. Representing Democrats, Republicans, and Independents, the debate underscored Afrovibes’ commitment to fairness and nonpartisan coverage.

Honoring a Legacy, Welcoming the Future

The evening began with a heartfelt tribute to trailblazers who shaped Texas’ 18th District — Sheila Jackson Lee, Sylvester Turner, Barbara Jordan, Mickey Leland, Craig Washington, and more. Their leadership defined the district’s role as a beacon of minority representation since its creation after the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Afrovibes highlighted its special relationship with these leaders, noting how they worked closely with the network to uplift communities. Their legacies were honored not just in words but in spirit, as the next generation of leaders presented their vision for Houston’s future.

Candidate Spotlights

Afrovibes gave the microphone to every candidate present, and they made their case directly to the people of Houston:

  • Jolanda Jones – Declared herself a proven fighter, citing her record of passing legislation. Promised to restore voting rights, healthcare, jobs, and education, proudly noting an endorsement from Craig Washington.
  • Isaiah Martin – Leaned on his experience as Sheila Jackson Lee’s senior adviser, pledging to block “Trump’s reckless budget cuts,” lower costs by axing tariffs, and bring federal dollars directly back to Houston.
  • Amanda Edwards – Made healthcare her top priority, sharing the personal story of losing her father to illness. She vowed to fight for affordable care, strong education, and economic opportunities for families in District 18.
  • Stephen Huey – Drew on his career in healthcare and finance startups, urging voters not to give up. He promised to “find allies” across the aisle to get results and said service means working harder when times get tough.
  • Carmen Montiel – Criticized decades of broken promises and neglect. Promised to audit Houston and Harris County to track $40 billion in unaccounted federal funds and pledged action on flooding, poverty, and transparency.
  • Christian Menefee – Framed himself as a fighter who doesn’t just talk but wins. Highlighted his record of suing and defeating Trump, Abbott, and Ken Paxton to protect healthcare, voting rights, and Houston families.
  • Vince Duncan – Running as an independent, he said his candidacy was built on listening to citizens. Positioned himself as a builder with concrete plans for clean air, affordable housing, education, and manufacturing jobs.
  • Ollie J. Knox – Focused on seniors, pledging a one-time $20,000 gift for those over 62. Also promised to strengthen Medicare, Social Security, and SNAP, while advocating for Latinos and children with autism.
