Company interviews and on-site coverage bring the people, technologies and conversations behind offshore energy to our audience.

HOUSTON, Texas — The Offshore Technology Conference returned to Houston’s NRG Park from August 16–19, 2021, bringing together energy professionals for a renewed exchange of ideas about offshore development and the industry’s future. Afrovibes TV & Radio covered the event and interviewed representatives of participating companies, adding their voices to our coverage of an industry navigating significant change. The conference combined in-person and virtual programming, extending participation beyond the exhibition floor.

For our Houston-based station, OTC offered an opportunity to connect audiences with the businesses and people behind a sector that influences employment, investment, technology and international commerce. Our presence placed company interviews alongside a larger story: how the offshore industry was responding to disruption while preparing for new energy demands.

The 2021 gathering carried particular significance following the cancellation of OTC 2020 because of COVID-19. Organizers moved the 2021 conference to August in response to continuing pandemic challenges, seeking to preserve opportunities for technical exchange while considering the health and safety of participants and the wider community.

Since its founding in 1969, OTC has provided a meeting place for professionals working on offshore resources and environmental matters. In 2021, that established mission intersected with a pressing question: how could the industry help meet global energy needs while contributing to a lower-carbon future? The opening session and the conference’s first Executive Dialogue series placed that challenge at the center of the program.

The announced opening panel included leaders from ADNOC Drilling, TechnipFMC, Shell and Wood Mackenzie, with National Ocean Industries Association President Erik Milito serving as moderator. The Executive Dialogue lineup extended the conversation to organizations including Amazon Web Services, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, ALLY Energy and the Hydrogen Council. Together, the program reflected the growing connections among offshore engineering, digital technology, workforce development and energy transition strategies.

International perspectives also helped broaden the discussion. A Netherlands-focused session explored the country’s approach to a more sustainable offshore energy system, including offshore wind and the development of carbon storage in offshore aquifers and depleted fields. These subjects illustrated how offshore expertise could support both established energy operations and emerging applications.

Entrepreneurship had a place on the agenda as well. The Rice Alliance Energy Venture Day at OTC was organized around presentations from 14 energy ventures, followed by questions from industry leaders. Its format connected emerging businesses with an audience of investors, energy professionals and members of Houston’s startup community, highlighting the role of new companies in developing the industry’s next generation of solutions.

For Afrovibes TV & Radio, interviewing company representatives was an important part of bringing the event beyond its professional audience. Those conversations gave participating businesses a platform within our coverage and brought a human perspective to a conference defined by technical expertise.

Energy reporting matters well beyond the companies that produce equipment or operate offshore facilities. It opens conversations about careers, business opportunities, environmental responsibility and the technologies that affect everyday life. Covering OTC allowed our station to place these subjects before a diverse audience while highlighting Houston’s connection to the international energy community.

OTC 2021 marked a return to industry exchange during a difficult period. Through our on-site coverage and company interviews, Afrovibes TV & Radio documented that moment and reinforced our commitment to reporting on the businesses, ideas and people shaping the world around us.
